Now, the tech billionaire has set his sights on an Argentine oil producer. His hedge fund, Thiel Macro, has taken a stake in Vista Energy, also causing a stir in the stock market. Why? Born in Frankfurt in 1967 and raised in the US, Thiel studied philosophy and law at Stanford and went on to become one of the most influential figures in Silicon Valley. He was not only one of the founders of PayPal, but also the first external investor in Facebook and a co-founder of Palantir.

Now, Vista Energy. Through Thiel Macro, the financier acquired around 1.2 million shares worth approximately USD 76 million. This corresponds to roughly 1% of the company’s capital. The deal was preceded by a meeting with Argentine President Javier Milei in Buenos Aires around four months ago. The mandatory disclosure does not reveal Thiel’s specific intentions behind the investment. However, a look at the portfolio provides some clues: In addition to Amazon, it includes several energy and power stocks such as Vistra, American Electric Power, DTE Energy, FirstEnergy and CMS Energy. Vista therefore fits well with a broader investment strategy focused on the global energy complex. Added to this is the bet on Argentina under Milei, whose government aims to drive investment and resource development. The president also plans to leverage Patagonia’s cold climate and abundant available space for the construction of data centres.

<generic-chart title="Vista Energy (in USD)">
    <chart-line title="Vista Energy" path="Chart_Vista.csv" format="date, number"></chart-line>
    <x-axis type="datetime"></x-axis> </generic-chart>

Source: Refinitiv, as of: 18.08.2026
Historical data is not a reliable indicator of future performance.

Growth from Vaca Muerta

The underlying investment has plenty to offer. Vista Energy is an independent oil and gas producer focused on Vaca Muerta in Argentina’s Neuquén province. The shale formation is considered one of the world’s most significant unconventional hydrocarbon deposits. Vista now controls around 257,000 acres in the core area and is concentrating virtually all of its growth on shale oil. At the end of the second quarter, 462 Vaca Muerta wells were in production, while nearly 1,500 additional locations are considered immediately developable, according to the company.

The latest figures illustrate the momentum. In the second quarter, production reached 156,061 barrels of oil equivalent per day, 32% above the prior-year level. Oil production increased by almost one-third to more than 135,000 barrels per day. Part of the increase came from organic expansion, while the stakes in Bandurria Sur and Bajo del Toro, consolidated in May, provided an additional boost. At the same time, Vista benefited from higher oil prices: The average realised price jumped 44% year-on-year to USD 89.40 per barrel.

Positive Earnings Trend

The resulting earnings increase was equally strong: Adjusted EBITDA nearly doubled to USD 805 million. The margin improved by three percentage points to an impressive 70%. Net income came in at just under USD 322 million, 37% higher than a year earlier. Particularly noteworthy is the company’s cost discipline: Despite the rapid increase in production, lifting costs per barrel of oil equivalent fell 4% to USD 4.50. The outlook also remains ambitious. Vista is targeting average production of 158,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day this year. This is expected to rise to 185,000 in 2027 and 208,000 by 2028. According to the company’s plans, adjusted EBITDA is expected to increase from USD 1.6 billion in 2025 to around USD 3.0 billion this year and USD 3.6 billion in 2028. By then, Vista expects to generate approximately USD 2.8 billion in cumulative free cash flow. However, these targets depend heavily on oil prices: The company is assuming Brent prices of USD 85 per barrel for the remainder of 2026.

<generic-chart title="Ebitda (in USD Mrd.)">
  <x-axis categories="2025,2026e,2027e,2028e"/>
      <chart-column title="Ebitda" data="1.6,3.0,3.3,3.6" format="number"/>
</generic-chart>

Source: Vista Energy, as of: August 2026, e = expected
Historical data is not a reliable indicator of future performance.

Coupon Rather Than a Breakout

The growth optimism is hardly new to the stock market. Following a steep rise, Vista shares have broadly been moving sideways since March. While news of Thiel’s investment recently triggered a jump in the share price, a sustained breakout from the previous trading range has yet to materialise. For now, the technical picture remains characterised by consolidation. This is precisely the scenario that can be exploited with Barrier Reverse Convertibles. The two new softcallable products each have a maturity of one year and nine months and will be fixed for the first time on 25 August 2026. The CHF-denominated version offers a guaranteed coupon of 8.0% p.a., while the USD product offers as much as 11.6% p.a. Coupons are paid quarterly. The barrier is set at 69% of the initial level, meaning it is 31% below the starting value. In addition, early redemption is possible from six months onwards as part of the soft-call structure.

Investors therefore do not need to rely on another surge in Vista’s share price to achieve an attractive coupon return. As long as the stock does not come under significant pressure, simply continuing to trade sideways may be sufficient to generate an attractive return. Even if the barrier is breached during the life of the product, the investment does not automatically end in a loss. If Vista is trading above the strike price at maturity, the maximum return is achieved despite the barrier breach. Otherwise, investors face losses, although these would be cushioned by the guaranteed coupon. The products therefore represent an interesting alternative for investors betting that Peter Thiel’s new favourite will continue to trade sideways for the time being.

Callable Barrier Reverse Convertibles

    <SavedSearch :allProducts="false" :filter="{"partner":"LEONTEQ","currencies":[],"issuers":[],"productCategories":[],"productGroups":[],"productTypes":[],"maturityRangeKey":[],"distanceToBarriers":[],"barrierLevelRanges":[],"strikeLevelRanges":[],"underlyings":[],"omni":"\\"CH1593769974\\"\\"CH1593770022\\"","conditions":{"+snapshot.product.secondary_market:true":false,"+snapshot.product.attributes.extended_trading_hours:true":false,"":true,"+snapshot.product.in_subscription:(\\"LEONTEQ\\")":false,"-_exists_:snapshot.product.in_subscription":false},"marketVenues":[],"assetClasses":[],"barrierTypes":[],"countrySpecificTitles":[],"couponFrequencies":[],"sortFields":[{"fieldName":"snapshot.product.investment.investment_currency","sortOrder":"ASC"}],"displayColumns":["coupon","underlying","barrierPercentage","currency","lastTradingDate","tenor","bidAsk","subscriptionEndDate","valor","documentLinks"]}">
                </SavedSearch>

We look forward to answering all of your questions about our products and how they are traded.
