The link runs through a seemingly inconspicuous raw material: sulphur. Since shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has been restricted, important supplies from the Gulf region have been disrupted. Sulphuric acid, in turn, is required to extract copper from oxide ores. Around one-fifth of global primary copper production is based on this technology. The conflict is therefore exacerbating an already tight supply situation. At the same time, the expansion of power grids and data centres, as well as AI infrastructure, is driving strong demand. In early August, the copper price on the London Metal Exchange (LME) temporarily climbed above USD 14,000 per tonne.

For mining companies, this is fundamentally a comfortable starting position. The higher the copper price, the greater the operating leverage, assuming stable production costs. Southern Copper is currently benefiting precisely from this effect. However, the shortage also has a downside: rising energy, transportation and chemical costs can make production more expensive. So far, however, the positive price effect has clearly outweighed these factors for the company.

<generic-chart title="Southern Copper (in USD)">
    <chart-line title="Southern Copper" path="Chart_SCCO.csv" format="date, number"></chart-line>
    <x-axis type="datetime"></x-axis> </generic-chart>

Source: Refinitiv, as of: 11.08.2026
Historical data is not a reliable indicator of future performance.

Explosive Growth

Southern Copper is one of the world's major integrated copper producers. The group's mines, smelters and refineries are located primarily in Mexico and Peru. Its major facilities include Buenavista and La Caridad in Mexico, as well as Toquepala and Cuajone in Peru. In addition to copper, the company produces molybdenum, zinc and silver. However, the red metal is by far the dominant commodity: copper accounted for around 73% of revenue in the second quarter and remains the group's most important earnings driver. The latest set of figures illustrates just how powerfully rising commodity prices are feeding through to the balance sheet. The company increased second-quarter revenue by 40.6% year on year to a record USD 4.28 billion, while net income surged 71.6% to USD 1.67 billion. EBITDA, meanwhile, rose by 59.5%, with the corresponding margin jumping from 58.7% to 66.6%. The average copper price was USD 6.04 per pound, almost 40% above the year-earlier level. Notably, the records were not driven by higher production volumes. The company's own copper production fell by 3.5%, while copper sales volumes declined by 1.5%. This makes the leverage from rising metal prices all the more apparent. Southern Copper also benefited from high prices for its by-products.

Million-Tonne Mark in Sight

The growth outlook is also impressive. For 2026, the Phoenix, Arizona-based company has raised its production target to 917,000 tonnes, around 1% more than originally planned. Production is expected to remain broadly stable in 2027 before new projects provide the next boost. Tía María in Peru is scheduled to start operations in the second half of 2027 and is expected to produce around 120,000 tonnes of copper annually during its first years of operation. For 2028, the company is targeting total production of around 970,000 tonnes, rising to 1.06 million tonnes in 2029. El Pilar in Mexico is also expected to contribute by then. The long-term target is to exceed 1.6 million tonnes by 2033/34. The investment programme for this decade amounts to more than USD 20 billion.

<generic-chart title="LME Copper (in dollar per pound)">
  <x-axis categories="Q1/25,Q2/25,Q3/25,Q4/25,Q1/26,Q2/26"/>
      <chart-column title="LME Copper (in dollar per pound)" data="4.24,4.32,4.44,5.03,5.83,6.04" format="number"/>
</generic-chart>

Source: Southern Copper, as of: August 2026
Historical data is not a reliable indicator of future performance.

Extended Consolidation

At the stock market level, however, the company's operational records have only been partially reflected in the share price recently. Following its steep rally to around USD 220 at the beginning of this year, Southern Copper subsequently lost some momentum. For several months, the stock has been moving sideways amid fluctuations, tracking the 100-day moving average. Most recently, it once again advanced towards the USD 200 mark. From a technical perspective, it is positive that the 200-day moving average continues to rise and has now established an additional level of support on the downside.

High Coupons, High Leverage

Such a scenario can be particularly interesting for yield enhancement products such as the new Softcallable Barrier Reverse Convertibles, which have a maximum maturity of one year and three months. The CHF version offers a guaranteed coupon of 13% p.a., while the USD version offers as much as 17% p.a. The coupon is paid quarterly. In each case, the barrier is set at 59% of the initial level and is monitored continuously. The first soft-call observation takes place after six months, followed by quarterly observations. This means investors can potentially achieve an attractive return even if Southern Copper shares move sideways or decline moderately. However, the high return potential does not come without risk: if the barrier is breached and the share price subsequently develops unfavourably, investors may incur losses.

Investors with a clear view on the stock's short-term direction can also now find long and short leveraged products on Southern Copper in Leonteq's increasingly broad product range. These instruments allow investors to position themselves for either an upside breakout (long) or another pullback (short). The leverage of the five derivatives currently on offer ranges from around 5 to more than 9.

Callable Barrier Reverse Convertible

    <SavedSearch :allProducts="false" :filter="{"partner":"LEONTEQ","currencies":[],"issuers":[],"productCategories":[],"productGroups":[],"productTypes":[],"maturityRangeKey":[],"distanceToBarriers":[],"barrierLevelRanges":[],"strikeLevelRanges":[],"underlyings":[],"omni":"\\"CH1555863575\\"\\"CH1555863617\\"","conditions":{"+snapshot.product.secondary_market:true":false,"+snapshot.product.attributes.extended_trading_hours:true":false,"":true,"+snapshot.product.in_subscription:(\\"LEONTEQ\\")":false,"-_exists_:snapshot.product.in_subscription":false},"marketVenues":[],"assetClasses":[],"barrierTypes":[],"countrySpecificTitles":[],"couponFrequencies":[],"sortFields":[{"fieldName":"snapshot.product.investment.investment_currency","sortOrder":"ASC"}],"displayColumns":["coupon","underlying","barrierPercentage","currency","lastTradingDate","tenor","bidAsk","subscriptionEndDate","valor","documentLinks"]}">
                </SavedSearch>

Leverage products on Southern Copper

            <leverage-saved-search :columns="[ 'engine.isin', 'engine.valor', 'Type', 'Direction', 'engine.underlying', 'engine.currency-abbr', 'Strike', 'Leverage', 'Ratio', 'engine.maturity', 'Bid', 'Ask']" :filter="{"conditions":{"+_exists_:price.ask +price.state:(\\"OPEN\\", \\"CLOSED\\")":false,"+_exists_:levels.stopLossLevelAbs":false,"+priceIndication.extendedTradingHours:true":false},"underlyings":["67159451"],"searchable":true}" />

We look forward to answering all of your questions about our products and how they are traded.
